The Carnatic Veena - also known as the Saraswati Veena — is the crown jewel of Indian classical music. Recognized as one of the oldest and most sophisticated string instruments in the world, the Veena holds a place of supreme reverence in the hearts of every Carnatic musician, music lover and devotee across India and beyond.
In Hindu mythology and Vedic tradition, the Veena is inseparable from Goddess Saraswati — the divine embodiment of wisdom, arts and music. She is eternally depicted holding the Veena in her sacred hands, playing melodies that flow like the river Ganga — pure, endless and life-giving. To play the Veena is therefore not merely a musical act — it is an act of worship, a prayer in sound and a devotional offering to the Goddess of Music herself.
Crafted by master luthiers from aged jackfruit wood (Panasa Kattai) — carefully selected and seasoned for years — the Carnatic Veena is a marvel of acoustic engineering and artistic craftsmanship. The instrument features a long fretted neck adorned with 24 precisely positioned brass frets, two large resonating gourds — one at the base and one at the top of the neck — and seven strings that together create a soundscape of extraordinary richness, depth and spiritual power.
